Before purchasing a keyboard, you need to decide what keyboard is right for you. To do this, you will need to figure out a few different things:

  • The first thing you need to decide is how much you are willing to spend. Keyboards can range anywhere from less than $100 to a couple of thousand dollars, so there is a very broad price range from which you can choose.
  • The second thing you will need to determine before purchasing your keyboard is your skill level and experience with keyboards and pianos. If you are just starting to play piano/keyboard, you may want to stick with an entry level keyboard with basic functionality. This goes along with the first point about determining how much you want to spend. Typically, the beginning pianist is going to spend less than a more seasoned, accomplished player.
  • The third thing you will want to determine is what kind of keyboard/instrument you want. There are different varieties of keyboard instruments. There are portable keyboards, digital pianos and arranger workstations or synthesizers. Each one serves a different purpose.
  • Finally, you will want to determine the technical capabilities that you want in your new instrument. If you want to be able to connect your keyboard/piano to your computer, you will look for one with MIDI Out capability. Fortunately, most Yamaha keyboards, even entry level models, will have this feature.

Once you have determined these things, you should have a general idea of the keyboard or instrument that is right for you. Learning a new instrument is an exciting thing, and the excitement begins with selecting the model that is right for you.
